Christiaans, W.A.
Aerdenhout
After World War II, W.A. Christiaans was earmarked as a political delinquent. On 12 November 1947, the Bijzonder Gerechtshof [Exceptional Court] in Amsterdam seized his collection of artworks, including this portrait bust. In spite of the fact that the SNK had indicated - as early as 1946 - that it viewed these artworks as 'a extremely welcome addition' to Dutch cultural heritage, the works were auctioned in 1953 at Frederik Muller in Amsterdam. As this portrait bust could not raise sufficient sums it was detained at the auction and then included in the NK collection.
